"Misquoting Jesus" Bart Ehrman

February 16, 2007

Bart Ehrman is a New Testament scholar at UNC Chapel Hill. He is one of the leading “textual criticism” scholars today for the New Testament and a self proclaimed “happy agnostic.” He has just released a book entitled Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why.
Ehrman has written this book with an agenda. He has been on popular radio shows, MPR, and even the Daily Show with John Stewart. His agenda is similiar to Dan Brown of The Da Vinci Code: to discredit the Bible and show that it is a man made book, basically, that it is not inspired nor inerrant, and Christianity is a man-made religion. He is highly praised among liberal and secular theologians, and his book is written at a “popular” level so that he will have a wider audience. Being seen on TV and heard on the radio, he has successfully been Amazon’s top seller for a number of weeks and #17 on the NYT’s. While there will probably not be a movie made from his book, Christians should be aware of his claims he makes and think hard on some of these issues or read material that counter his propositions.
You can watch his interview with John Stewart on the Daily Show here.

Ehrman sure is stomping around for himself these days… it’s a strange thing when scholars decide that their place in life is to become a stumbling block to others’ faith based upon distorted and sometimes, flat out false evidence.
