In Case You Have Not Heard

October 16, 2007

In case you have not heard, John Owen’s Communion With the Triune God has recently been released, edited by Kelly Kapic and Justin Taylor. I have been reading through it for the second time recently and have been amazed at Owen’s clear understanding of the Trinity and the Trinity’s communion with the children of God.

John Piper writes of Owen’s Communion:

No one else has laid open the paths of personal fellowship with the three persons of the Trinity the way Owen does. What an honor it would be to God if more of his children knew how to enjoy him the way Owen does.

You can also read the forward from Kevin Vanhoozer and chapter one both from Westminster Bookstore.

And since it is paperpack, it is significantly cheaper than the Banner of Truth edition!

Aw, now come on. This Crossway paperback lists for $22.00, but Banner of Truth has the Puritan Paperback, Owen’s “Communion with God,” slightly abridged and made easier to read, for just $9.00. BUT, you can buy it for just $6.30 at Or, if you actually want the original Volume Two from the 16-volume set, “The Works of John Owen,” with clothbinding that’ll last long enough to pass down to your kids, that’s only a few dollars more than what you’ll pay for this paperback!
Just trying to keep us all honest.

Mr. Burlew – Please accept my humble apologies. If you notice to the left of the this post is the section “Books I am Reading” and I am currently reading and own the Banner of Truth edition. I mean no disrespect to the Banner of Truth Trust. I am in indebted to your ministry, since I own many of your Puritan Paperbacks, editions of Puritan works and biographies. My intention was only to celebrate that the contemporary Church is still reading Owen today and make many efforts to put him in the hands of several who would otherwise not read him. Thanks for the comment! And God bless!

John – No need to apologize; as you rightly observed and said in your additional email to me, I did write that comment light-heartedly. Get to know me, John; you’ll soon learn that I don’t get upset or “bent out of shape” over such things. I do share your excitement, though, that, regardless of where they buy it, people are getting exposed to the likes of Owen and others, and that is a very good thing, especially young guys! Oh, how I want to get Owen’s “Mortification of Sin,” and Watson’s “Godly Man’s Picture,” etc., into the hands of young people so they see examples of godliness that is just so very rare today! Anyway, no problem with me, brother! Write me more, and anytime; stay in touch!
