Mark 5 and Christ’s Authority Over Death

July 6, 2009

Mark 5:21-43 is the story of Jesus raising Jairus’ daughter from the dead.  Many interpret this passage as not a resurrection story since Jesus claims that the little girl was only asleep (v. 39).  But I think we misunderstand Jesus when we make that interpretation.  It is interesting that Jesus also claims that Lazrus was only sleeping in John 11.  I do not believe Jesus’ statements make death less significant for the little girl and Lazrus.  Death is still a pervasive event in their existence and for all humans.  Yet, throughout his Gospel, Mark has displayed the authority of Jesus over diseases, the sabbath, the Law, demons, creation, and now over death – through the raising of Jairus’ daughter.  So then, when I Corinthians 15:26 says, “the last enemy to be destroyed is death,” we know – our hope is sure – that God will have final victory over death.  Not only because Jesus shows authority over death in Mark 5, but that Jesus rose from the dead in the defeat of the sting of death – sin!  Praise the Lord for his Gospel.
