God Is Spirit

July 27, 2009

catechismboysgirlsIts a joy to watch our first daughter, Corinne, start grasping larger theological concepts in going through A Catechism for Boys and Girls with her.  It is interesting to see what discussions come from some of the questions.  The most recent has been the most difficult one for me to help her think through.  Here is the question and answer:

Does God have a body like us?

No, God is Spirit, infinite and eternal.

It really stretches my brain in trying to articulate to a little girl why having a body would limit an infinite God.  He does not have eyes, but he sees all things.  He does not have arms, but his reach is not too short to save!  He does not have a mouth, but his Word is eternal.  All the while, she is wondering why he doesn’t have a neck!  We may not move past this one so quickly.
