Thomas Schreiner and Two Keys to Understanding the Kingdom

September 27, 2009

Tom Schreiner spends an entire chapter, in his New Testament Theology, on the Kingdom theme in the Synoptics.  He gives two helpful insights or keys, rather, that he repeatedly emphasizes to keep  in mind when understanding the kingdom in the Synoptics:

  1. The already/not yet theme, which Schreiner repeatedly emphasizes throughout his book, should help us see and begin to understand that in the Christian life we have some things accomplished and fulfilled, but not all are realized.
  2. The meaning of the kingdom must be discerned from the Old Testament and God’s saving promises since Jesus nowhere defines it.  This is especially helpful when discerning Matthew’s formulae of fulfillment.
